The Real Girl's Guide to Post-Grad Life

No job lined up after graduation? Time to start panicking? Take it from the pro herself.

By Taylor Buononato

Graduate, then land the job that pays six figures, they said. It'll be fun, they said. When I graduated from the University of Arizona this past May, I soon found out that life rarely goes as expected or planned. Living at home with my parents was far from where I expected to find myself, but home cooked meals, free laundry and cuddling with my dog isn't bad either.

I'm pretty sure every college graduate envisions starting a career immediately or not far after graduation day, but getting there is not as easy as it seems. Four months after graduation, I am still jobless with nagging parents and frantically sending my resume anywhere and everywhere.

(HELP ME. I'M POOR.)

So, what now? After some major soul searching, I decided that a post-grad internship was the way to go, which led me to this incredible internship with xPose PR. Employers nowadays are looking for candidates with one or two years of experience, leaving me wondering, "How am I supposed to gain experience if nobody will hire me?"

I have come to this simple conclusion: the more experience, the merrier. Maybe this internship was one of my better ideas. Maybe this is exactly what I need and a missing puzzle piece to landing my dream job while continuing to learn and having fun along the way. Why not take on post-grad life at your own pace?

Internships are the best way to dabble in different industries and truly learn your likes and dislikes when it comes to office culture, job duties and skill sets. There is no sense in rushing your job search. Because, after all, life is not a sprint, it's a marathon.

Pilates Platinum Celebrates 10 Years of Fun-Inspired Fitness

By Kelsy Ralph

Last week, we had the honor of hosting the most fabulous birthday bash celebrating 10 years of Pilates Platinum. What started out as a dream-turned-one-studio-in-Hollywood for founder Heather Dorak turned into four beautiful studios throughout the Los Angeles area, thousands of happy clients and a lasting footprint on LA's fitness scene.

Pilates Platinum presents a fun, innovative approach to fitness. The workout marries cardio and strength training in a 55-minute session on the state-of-the-art Megaformer, with the potential to burn up to 700 calories per workout. With the understanding that our minds and bodies crave change, Pilates Platinum instructors never repeat the same workout twice, providing what the body needs each and every class. The small group instruction setup (no more than 14 participants per class) serves as a semi-private session with individualized attention and assistance to enhance the studio's full-body fat burning and conditioning curriculum.

Dorak fell in love with the workout as soon as she experienced her first workout on a Megaformer, or a revolutionary version of the typical Pilates machine. She saw incredible results after just a short time, and her passion for health and fitness inspired her to open her own first studio in 2006. A small goal of introducing this amazing workout to the local community thrived and grew into what Pilates Platinum is today.

Ten years is kind of a big deal, so of course we had to celebrate in a big way. The guest list included LA's top fitness influencers, movers and shakers and of course Pilates Platinum's loyal clients! Attendees came ready to sweat, enjoying an evening full of pop-up shops, light bites, spirits, guest speakers, sponsored gift bags and mini Pilates sessions. DJ Monika Santucci kept the good vibes flowing with an upbeat mix of empowering oldies and today's top hits.

Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated with us! It really was the best.night.ever! Enjoy clicking through the photo collage below!

A Look Inside My Bag

By Sami Delavari

As an intern and full-time student, I'm always on the go. I try to carry all the essentials in my bag for last-minute emergencies so I can be ready for all things life-related. (Okay, maybe not everything, but at least I prevent some beauty and technological mishaps.) I've never been the kind of girl to carry a huge bag, because it's just impractical for my personal everyday activities. Give me a crossover bag and I'm happy as can be. Rebecca Minkoff is one of my favorite handbag designers, because her products are trendy and elegant yet wearable. If I were to dump the contents of my bag onto a table at any given moment, here is what you'd find:

  1. Rebecca Minkoff "Isobel Saddle Bag:" The perfectly sized bag for everyday errands and activities.
  2. Bobbi Brown "Rich Color Gloss" in Pink Raspberry-Bright Rose: This gloss will not only hydrate your lips, it will look great in your selfies, too. (A.K.A. a win-win.)
  3. Wildfox "Classic Fox" Deluxe Glasses: You will rarely find me out of the house without a pair of my trusty Wildfox sunglasses to shield the summer sun.
  4. Nivea Travel Size Tin: Avoid dry skin with this compact lotion that smells delicious, too.
  5. Clean and Clear "Oil Absorbing Sheets:" These oil blotters will keep your skin and makeup looking fresh all day long. Goodbye mid-day oily skin meltdowns!
  6. Apple iPhone Charger: Unfortunately, these days it's rare to maintain a full phone battery all day. Between work (and school) emails and snapchat stories, your phone is bound to lose juice.

The Real Girl's Guide to Commuting

By Shelby Nix

Sometimes a girl's gotta spend some time in transit to make it to the top. Here are my suggestions on how to make your daily commute enjoyable and productive.

The Night Before

Make a groovy playlist so you can belt out your favorite tunes (I know you do). I recommend our "xPose Ultimate Summer Playlist" to make the I-5 bearable.

The Morning Of

Grab your green smoothie before you hit the road! My go-to recipe is:

  1. One cup kale (fresh or frozen)
  2. One cup frozen mangos
  3. Handful of chia seeds
  4. Three ice cubes
  5. One cup cucumber
  6. Small piece of ginger
  7. Fresh green tea
  8. Water to blend

*To save time in the morning, separate frozen and refrigerated ingredients into Ziplock bags the night before so you can grab and go!

En Route

Listen to your playlist, audiobook or podcast to take your mind off of the morning madness. "#GIRLBOSS Radio" by Nasty Gal's Sophia Amoruso and CollegeFashionista's "Office Hours" series are my favorite subscriptions to gain inspiration from women who go out into the world and get what they want!

Best Episode from "#GIRLBOSS Radio":

#SoleMatesOfSummer

By Kelsy Ralph

This past week, we hosted a botanical beach-themed brunch with Sara Melissa Designs. We, along with 20 of our closest blogger, stylist and media maven friends, celebrated "Sole Mates" with an exclusive preview of SMD's "Flower Power" duo, a try-on station, delicious light bites complete with margaritas and PINK coladas, and an Instagram giveaway contest. It was a perfect way to bid a bittersweet farewell to xPose's amazing summer interns, and everyone spent the afternoon mixing and mingling, laughing and talking all things shoes.

SMD's "Sole Mates" collection is designed around the principle that the forces that define our differences in life are the same forces that draw us together; the Yin and Yang. That perfect harmony would not exist without individuality.

Thank you to all who joined us, you will always be our Summer Sole Mates! xo, xPose

Monday Detox Smoothie

By Emily Sowski

After being #GIRLBOSSes in the Dollhouse all week long, we love to enjoy our hard-earned weekend adventures and treats. Dancing in heels, drinking bubbly with the girls and having no shame in eating a 2AM pepperoni pizza. Oops? Life is about balance, right? We believe so. But when Monday rolls around, after all the lifelong memories have been made, we crave an internal reset button, which is why we're sharing our ultimate Dollhouse Detox Smoothie.

This recipe is amazing because, not only do the ingredients detoxify, aid in digestion and de-bloat, it's full of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Spinach brings vitamins A, C, E, K and B6 to the party, while cucumber shows up with potassium and maganese. The holy grail, apple cider vinegar combined with lemon is a must-have, because it returns our bodies to their natural pH balances while aiding in weight loss. Ginger relieves heartburn, nausea, digestive issues and acid reflux.

Last, but not least, we can't forget our balance of macronutrients to keep us feeling full and satisfied throughout the day. We love adding a banana for carbs and almond butter for protein and healthy fats. So come Monday, pick out a fabulous outfit, killer shoes and blend up those greens to conquer the hustle of the week ahead. Cheers!

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup spinach
  2. 1/2 cucumber
  3. 1 banana
  4. Juice + zest of 1/2 lemon
  5. 2 tbsp. almond butter
  6. Nub of ginger
  7. 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  8. 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  9. 1 cup ice

*Optional (extra fancies):

  1. Sprinkle of cinnamon
  2. 1/4 avocado

Weekend Wanderlust: San Diego

By Shelby Nix

San Diego is sunny and 75 nearly every day, making the locale a perfect destination for a weekend getaway at any time. Located just two hours south of Los Angeles, San Diego is an ideal area to explore epic sunsets, enviable beach spots and endless outdoor activities. I recently spent a weekend in this beautiful place, and wanted to share a breakdown of my recommendations for a leisurely drive down the Coast!

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 12.36.49 PM.png

10:00 AM: Carlsbad, in North County, is where I'd definitely suggest weekend warriors start their adventure on Pacific Coast Highway. Jump off the 5 Freeway South and take Carlsbad Village Drive to PCH. Carlsbad has a quaint city center with small juice shops and organic eats to fulfill any health nut's cravings! Grab a small bite at Naked Café to fuel your body and mind before the big day ahead.

11:00 AM: Enjoy the sunshine while eyeing the ocean views between Carlsbad, Leucadia and Encinitas. Hipster hotspot Coffee Coffee in Leucadia will satisfy all your kale and caffeine needs. The newly repainted wall mural on the side of the building is ideal for a quick Instagram photoshoot!

1:00 PM: La Jolla is a must-see for all San Diego visitors. In my opinion, the town is san Diego's Laguna Beach. Pack a picnic lunch and head down to the beach for a midday tan. Before you move onto your next coastal community, visit La Jolla's Salk Institute for the country's best architectural seascapes.

3:00 PM: As you venture down into Downtown San Diego, spend some time at Balboa Park. Experience the outdoor music, colorful pedicabs and Spanish architecture while stepping into the many museums that the park offers. The European ambiance makes for an entirely international afternoon.

6:00 PM: It's dinner time! Indulge at The Crack Shack in Little Italy. This upscale fried chicken counter is a place where you will break all of your healthy habits with #NoRegrets. The Coup Deville Sandwich with a side of their crispy french fries is heaven on Earth!

8:00 PM: If you're planning to make this an overnight trip, there is no better place to stay than the famous Hotel Del Coronado! After you check in, embark on a moonlit walk on the beach and reflect on your fabulous day down the Coast!

Splurge or Save?: Makeup Edition

By Abby Price

If there is one major principle a PR girl can take from college to the Real World, it's that cheeky saying "Dress Well, Test Well." Well, a great look isn't complete without a killer beauty routine. When we look good, we feel good and our performance for the day will match. Nothing helps us conquer our day more than confidence and a positive attitude, and these subtle products will enhance your natural beauty.

I'm sharing some of my high end favorites, as well as their dupes that will help you achieve the same look for less. Not all makeup is created equal, so I'm weighing in on which products are worth the hype and which ones are worth saving a few dollars. (Maybe put those savings towards those shoes you've been eyeing?)

BLENDING

Sephora Beauty Blender: $20

Sephora Beauty Blender: $20

When it comes to hassle-free makeup application, the beauty blender is an absolute must. The damp sponge will make your go-to foundation look flawless.

Verdict: Between Sephora's Beauty Blender and Ulta's Blending Sponge, these two are basically the same (other than their shape). Save yourself the $14!

EYESHADOW

Tarte Tartelette in Bloom: $45
Makeup Revolution Iconic Pro 1: $12

Makeup Revolution Iconic Pro 1: $12

Eyeshadow is my favorite makeup to work with, and what truly brings a look together in my opinion. This Tarte palette blends like a dream and even smells like vanilla. However, this Makeup Revolution assortment has similar colors and great reviews.

Verdict: Worth the splurge, but the Iconic Pro palette is a close second!

LASHES

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara: $23
Revlon Ultra Volume Mascara: $8.99

Revlon Ultra Volume Mascara: $8.99

Everyone wants voluminous and full lashes, and this Too Faced mascara does it all. The thick wand adds volume without clumping, and makes your lashes look pretty close to perfect. Revlon's version has a similar brush style that is great for intending to achieve the same look, but the results just aren't as great.

Verdict: The name "Better Than Sex" is right. Worth it!

LIPS

A liquid lipstick in the perfect shade is the cherry on top to any makeup routine. Too Faced has a great selection, but NYX has a formula that is just as good with the same colors and beyond.

Verdict: Save and buy two (or three) NYX liquid lipsticks for the price of one Too Faced lip color.

By Sami Delavari

Everyone knows that the best way to get a head start in any industry is to intern, intern and then intern again. In the world of Public Relations, connections and the way you present yourself are #everything. While many believe that the hardest part is landing the internship, the real obstacles come the moment you walk through the door. It is always important to put your best self forward, because you never know where it could lead you. The relationships you form will be very beneficial to your future career, and the learning experience is invaluable. Often times, people climb the ranks by simply starting off as an intern. If you can prove your dedication and hard work, then chances are your boss will take note. With that in mind, arriving prepared and looking your absolute best are a must.
